“There are many conservation issues that people think are too hard—those are my passion!” says Dr. Will Pitt, deputy director and associate director of Conservation and Science. Guam was once an island filled with birds, but the introduction of the brown tree snakes in the 1940s caused Guam Rail populations to drop from around 10,000 birds to just 21 individuals by 1981. “In the 1980s, scientists captured the remaining birds and brought them into human care for breeding,” says Pitt. Since then, breeding programs like SCBI’s have restored wild populations to over 200 individuals. #WeSaveSpecies #EarthOptimism2018
