The highs and lows of the @jeffersonmarketlibrary include being voted as one of the 10 most beautiful buildings in America by a poll of architects in the 1880s, to almost being knocked down in 1959, when the building had become home only to pigeons and rats (@nypl).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This parcel of land evolved from: a food market (1830s) ⏩a courthouse (1877) ⏩a women’s prison where Mae West was a guest (1927) and Women's House of Detention (1929) ⏩a public library (1967) & garden (1973) that has been serving the West Village community.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
