And Nana would call us over to sit by her and tell us tales of the old country. She’d coo “dođi k meni svoju djecu” (come to me my children) and we would gather around her chair, it belonged to her great grandmother, her “Gyab Gyab”and Nana would tell us exotic tales of her, now bygone, motherland, a place called “Yugoslavia” (which is Croatian for “Get Out of Hear, Slavia!”) And Nana, her armchair being her only material memory of Yugoslavia would talk for hours about the grand dances in the town square, the loaf of bread her family would get every month, the town cow and their betting game of “Is It Still Snowing?” When she speaks, I see a glimmer in her eye, a sparkle for her old life, a yearning for the simplicity of antiquity. After story time, we leave Nana be. We never want to exhaust her with demands for stories... also she saw her whole family murdered right in front of her before she boarded a boat for America so, that’s gotta be hard on her. Glad she has her chair though. #nana #oldcountry
