These are the young Maori men, members of the Maori battalion who fought in Greece performing the haka. 11859 New Zealand soldiers arrived for the Battle Of Crete 671 were killed 967 wounded 2180 captured to spend years in deplorable conditions as POWs. The Maori Battalion were lauded for their bravery, a lack of ammunition seeing them charge into confrontations with only bayonets - because of their notoriety in the fierce hand to hand battles they were called by the local Cretans "The knife men".
