Ironically, but fittingly, this interview appears in the NYT a publication that employs two critics who have for years embarrassingly rejected the beautiful, soulful, courageous, brutally honest and vital voice of this playwright and her characters. I hope that Mr Brantley and Ms Soloski read and reflect. The privilege that allows one to, from the outside, tell a member of a community that they don’t understand the voice of their OWN community and don’t know how to represent the voice of a person’s OWN community is a privilege so deep that it almost defies imagination. Class is the 3rd rail of our country’s artistic discussion.The level to which these critics have insisted that the voice of this artist & the reality of HER OWN experience fit into their comfortable version of what her community SHOULD sound like is proof of how far we have to go.
