On Friday, April 27th, students from around the country will take a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBTQ bullying and harassment in schools. Students participating in #DayofSilence2018 then engage their communities in taking action to #BreakTheSilence
GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey found that 85% of LGBTQ students report experiencing verbal harassment in their K-12 school; 80% don’t see positive LGBTQ representation in their curriculum, and almost a third miss school for feeling unsafe, which can strain overall performance and lead to academic failure.
The goal is to get high schools to adopt and implement comprehensive anti-bullying policies that will protect not only LGBTQ students, but any other student experiencing bullying for any reason including their race, gender, ethnicity, and religion.
