This is me participating in @glsenofficial #DayofSilence. These videos are gearing everyone up for tomorrow. Friday, April 27th, students from all around the country will take a vow of silence in hopes of calling attention to the effects that anti-LGBTQ bullying and harassment in schools can have on us humans, especially when we’re smaller ones. This is something that effected my school experience when I was growing up because I was involved with theater and tap dancing, which meant that I must be gay and meant that I was picked on by other kids for doing the things that made me happy. This is one of the reasons why I consider myself an ally for all of my LGTBQ friends and the LGTBQ youth. GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey found that 85% of LGBTQ students report experiencing verbal harassment in their K-12 school; 80% don’t see positive LGBTQ representation in their curriculum, and almost a third miss school for feeling unsafe, which can strain overall performance and lead to academic failure. The goal is to get high schools to adopt and implement comprehensive anti-bullying policies that will protect not only LGBTQ students, but any other student experiencing bullying for any reason including their race, gender, ethnicity, and religion. I have accepted @felicityhuffman’s challenge and challenge @lathoma3 @t22felton @robbierogers to make their own video and donate $10 to @glsenofficial at glsen.org/silence AND challenge 3 more friends!
