#tbt from @nytarchives | Imagine a world before FaceTime. In 1964, our photographer Sam Falk took this photo of a boy using the “Picturephone,” which debuted that April at the New York World's Fair. With Ford Mustangs, color televisions and “see-as-you-talk” telephones, the fair was a celebration of things to come. And the Picturephone stuck around — at least for a while. A year after this photo was taken, one of our reporters joined a group of businessmen as they called customers in Washington. “While this might sound like something out of 1984, it is far from that,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. “Some companies have found that they can sell effectively by demonstrating their products to customers miles away without actually traveling to see them.” The men walked away with an order for nearly $8,000 in merchandise — and saved both time and money in the process. Of course, there were limitations. To use a Picturephone, you had to go to one of 3 air-conditioned booths, in either New York, Chicago or Washington. And there was no time for small talk: A 3-minute call between New York and Chicago cost $27 — more than $200 today — plus tax. Each additional minute: $9. ??
