Don’t have a label? Start one. Need a producer? Find one. Or even better, teach yourself. Technology has changed everything. The playing field is somewhat leveled. As independent artists we have access to more methods of creating, distributing and marketing music than ever before. Ok so it’s also gotten pretty noisy out there, and it cutting through can feel overwhelming. But don’t stop creating, keep focus and drive and determination. Surround yourself with good people. Don’t compare. Build your own universe. Listen to your fans (even if there’s only one!). Learn when to take criticism and when to trust your gut. If something’s not working change it. Evolve. Turn your broken heart into art, your pain into gold. Adapt or die. Ignore the voices that tell you no, both from outside and the one within, that’s scared of humiliation and failure. Don’t be afraid to bare your soul, after all isn’t that what this is all about? Keep riding the rollercoaster until someone physically forces you to get off. I’ve had a lot of messages from independent musicians and those starting out lately and for what it’s worth this is my advice?
(Also lol I wrote this on the plane when I always get really emotional and philosophical and cry in every film... ?)
