Some artists are all about delivering pleasure, and anyone who caught Avicii at a festival or in a club knows his music was one of the most ecstatic sounds of modern EDM. The 28-year-old Swede, a superstar producer and DJ whose real name is Tim Bergling, was expert at calibrating a pulse to ignite a crowd. From Ibiza to Vegas to Miami, a throng of fans reacting to the pumping beats of an Avicii performance were united in a shared experience: giving themselves over to euphoria. His unexpected passing on April 20 in Muscat, Oman, is a deep loss. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Like many dance artists, he learned the lexicon of house music early on. As a teen he was making a local impact and earning compliments for his inventive manipulations of the beat when sharing tracks on the Laidback Luke Forum, a breeding ground for up-and-comers.  Early efforts such as “ManMan” and “Sound Of Now” impressed both his peers and heroes. By the time “Levels” dropped in 2011, it was obvious the 22-year-old had a unique POV. His tracks arrived with the propulsive boom of house, but boasted a deep respect for melody. It was dance music you sing along to, and its well-contoured catchiness nudged him into the mainstream. The fact that “Levels” boasted a hilarious “office-nerd” video was icing on the cake. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The arrival of 2013’s ‘True’ exploded the pop aspect of the producer’s vision. Avicii, who was one of Vevo’s key LIFT artists that year, knew the bedrock beats of dance music could incorporate a variety of other sounds, and from country to soul, songs such as “Wake Me Up” and “Hey Brother” used unexpected stylistic motifs to widen their impact. It worked big-time. ‘True’ brought the world several smashes and made the DJ a global superstar. More hits and bigger crowds followed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ultimately, Avicii was in the transportation business. The power of his music moved fans to places they couldn’t get to on their own. He connected individuals, and gave them a sense of community. “I don’t think there’s anything as epic as seeing tens of thousands of people sing along to your music,” he told Vevo years ago, “…being together as one. You don’t get that anywhere else.” - Jim Macnie
