Invertebrates of Instagram! Last week we profiled the 5 main groups of vertebrates… Now let’s talk about the amazingly bizarre, impressively diverse and extremely important invertebrates! Invertebrates make up more than 95% of all animals on earth. They are usually simple organisms that rely on instinct – but there are exceptions, like the octopus, which is very intelligent. There are many groups of invertebrates and they are sometimes categorized into 6 groups: Sponges, Cnidarian, Echinoderms, Worms, Mollusks and Arthropods. Sponges are porous multicellular organisms that have no nervous, digestive, or circulatory systems. Cnidarian are predominantly marine species that have specialized cells to catch prey. You may recognize some cnidarian as jellyfish! Echinoderms can be recognized by their radial symmetry. They are saltwater creatures including: starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Worms have no limbs. They’re either parasitic living inside the bodies of other animals, or free-living in water or underground. Mollusks compose about 23% of all marine organisms. They compose some of the most neurologically advanced invertebrates, like the octopus! Arthropods have an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and pair jointed appendages. More than 80% of all living animal species are arthropods including, insects, arachnids and crustaceans! . . . . . . . . . . #invertebrates #invertebratesofinstagram #Wildlife #animalsofinstagram #animalfacts #animalplanet
