Barbara Bush, First Lady, Incredible Woman, US Matriarch, who has died at 92, was best known for campaigning to eradicate illiteracy, for battling racial injustice and for her - sometimes troublemaking – wit. In a famous exchange with Marge Simpson of The Simpsons, a TV show she once described as “the dumbest thing [she] had ever seen”, Bush opened her letter with: “Dear Marge, How kind of you to write, I’m glad you spoke your mind; I foolishly didn’t know you had one.” Always unapologetic, Bush also wrote openly in her memoir about her depression, supported gun control & was pro-choice, despite the position taken by many of her husband’s supporters. Whether you agreed with her or not, she commanded respect. The world has lost a good one.
