This past weekend, I had a conversation with a young dancer and it hasn’t left my mind since. She told me how she doesn’t understand why she’s not where other people are. She sees all of these amazingly talented people posting all of these success stories and incredible dance videos and she wondered why she wasn’t at the same level. She found herself constantly comparing herself to people she follows on social media. Listen, what you see on social media is just what people want you to see. No one wants to share their failures, only the successes. People rarely show the hard work, only the finished product. A lot of times, we do it for self esteem, to make ourselves feel important or to share our achievements, but we don’t realize that we are creating a world where kids sometimes think that they won’t amount to anything because they aren’t immediately as talented, in shape, successful, or happy as what they see on social media. Well I want to take a second and tell you, “I’ve failed... a lot.” I’ve been fired from jobs that I wasn’t right for, I’ve cried through rehearsals, I’ve choreographed numbers I wasn’t proud of and I’ve felt like a nobody who wouldn’t amount to anything. I’ve been there and it sucks. But I tell you this to show you that if I’ve felt this way and come out the other side a success story, that you can be successful in whatever ways you dream of. As long as you work hard, have integrity and remain honest & humble, life can be more fulfilling than you THINK you see on social media. It’s okay to fail. It’s okay not to be perfect. And most importantly, it’s okay to admit it. ❤️ To all my influencer friends, I challenge you to show this generation that what they see on social media doesn’t show the journey. Show them that you fail and go through hard times too. Show them that #socialmediaisntreallife.
