Truth be told, i wasn’t aboard the Prince #ForYou train 40 yrs ago like all of your posts lead us to think. #1999 was my 1st album. Timing was everything. he made a hell of an entry: his single premiered on @wdasfm the moment my dad broke the news about my grandfather’s passing. 9 times outta 10 when tragedy strikes you turn the volume down—gunshots in the club, cops pull you over, car accident—-no one wants a soundtrack to trauma. But 7 was too young to deal w/ death (but old enough to critique music? like i was wise enough to spot he had too many #GrahamCentralStation leanings w the synthwork & his deep voice adlib on #SoftAndWet—-typin this I’m SMH cause I know “oh! Drake’s uncle’s group!!” has now surpassed “legendary funkster” or “member of Sly & The Family Stone” or “cat that invented the bass thumping”—-?—he was @プリンス’s hero too so it’s understandable why a alike/b alike. it was cool but not “buy me this lp” cool. His #RightOn interviews were funnier/more interesting to me than the music (hey I was 7! Buying a stick of gum & going to @マクドナルド to smell fries is a hell of a poverty visual/admission).
His first real hit caught my attention because I loved the synth work of the 2nd half jam of #IWannaBeYourLover (his nod to #JoeTex’s #AintGonnaBumpNoMore’s horn work on the fade) but I still wasn’t investing allowance loot. #DirtyMind barely existed. I think I heard #Uptown once on radio.if it weren’t for Ken Tucker’s @@@@1/2 star lead review in @Rolling Stone i woulda dismissed him at this point. Shoulda brought #Controversy but ??‍♂️. I didn’t put 2&2 together about #TheTime til later (i was aboard from the gate!.....of their 2nd single “Cool” lol) so i had to work my way backwards (“oh... he IS cool” was my reaction to that dance break in #LittleRedCorvette’s video—imma cop this album) I paid a price for it tho punishments galore from strict household (his vibe wasn’t kid friendly but music was too mind blowing to pass) just giving a 5 Star #ErrolFlynn dance salute to 40 yrs of excellent innovation. Wish he was here to celebrate w us.
