Marguerite Annie Johnson Angelou (April 4, 1928 to May 28, 2014), known as Maya Angelou, was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction best-seller by an African-American woman. During her life, Angelou became a voice for black woman, championing their strength and shining light on their narratives through her works. Her journey was especially remarkable for the trauma she overcame. Angelou was raped at age 7 by her mother’s boyfriend. That caused her to become mute for six years, and she began writing. She devoting herself to reading and falling in love with literature after it gave her the courage to rediscover her voice and overcome the trauma. As a young woman she was a mother, a fry cook, a prostitute, a brothel madam, San Francisco's first black female streetcar conductor, a nightclub calypso dancer and toured Europe in George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess. She lived in Ghana, befriended Billie Holiday, Malcolm X and James Baldwin, directed a feature film and was the first poet since Robert Frost in 1961 to recite at a US presidential inauguration when she read her verse "On the Pulse of Morning" as Bill Clinton was sworn in at the White House in 1992. "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel," the lady herself once observed. She was also an educator and served as the Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. Carol E. Neubauer in Southern Women Writers: The New Generation said, "Angelou had become recognized not only as a spokesperson for blacks and women, but also for all people who are committed to raising the moral standards of living in the United States." Dr Maya Angelou lived an extraordinary life and is remembered today on what would have been her 90th birthday. #herstory #timeless
