Central American migrants on a caravan through #Mexico rest at a sports field in Matias Romero, Oaxaca State, on Tuesday.
.
The group of more than 1,000 men, women, and children marching from #CentralAmerica toward the United States promising to seek asylum made headlines on Sunday and Monday when President Donald Trump falsely complained on Twitter that the hundreds of likely #asylum seekers were seeking DACA protections and creating a dangerous situation. (No undocumented immigrant crossing the U.S. border now would be eligible for protections under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.)
.
The "Stations of the Cross" caravans have been held annually in southern Mexico for about 10 years. They began as short processions of #migrants, some dressed in biblical garb and carrying crosses, as an Easter-season protest against the kidnappings, extortion, beatings and killings suffered by many Central American migrants as they cross Mexico.
.
The organized portions of the caravans usually have not gone much farther north than the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.
