It’s World Autism Awareness Day. I feel incredibly connected to this because of my life growing up around many people with Autism. My mum’s work as a carer for adults with various special needs meant I spent many summer holidays as a child doing arts and crafts, gardening, cooking, horse riding etc with the adults she cared for at a day opportunities centre she worked at. Later, when I was 14, she decided to do her work from home and she began caring for a woman with autism who moved into our home and has been with us ever since. She’s family. Then this beautiful boy, Tiko, came into my life when I worked with his dad.... and I fell in love with him and now I get to call him my Godson ❤️ What have I learned from all this? That Autism can be really really hard, and distressing for the person battling it. And for those who love and care for them. But it can be sooo amazing because while a person may struggle with many things they have brilliant minds, big hearts and so much love to give. Most of all... it’s taught me that, like everyone, a person with autism needs to be nurtured and not written off as incapable... They are deserving of kindness, patience and acceptance too.... and that we should just meet everybody where they are at. Many people with Autism have achieved incredible levels of success and figured out the answers to some of the world’s most complex questions. I have felt so much love for and from people born with Autism.... and I have been left in awe of parents and carers. I feel lucky to have had all of these experiences and relationships.... I am eternally grateful. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #Autism #love #acceptance #kindness #deserving #family #thankful #godson #amazing #Tiko #TheGrove #comingthrough #tramlife
