Israeli forces shoot tear gas at Palestinian protesters along the Gaza - Israeli border fence Friday. The protests mark #LandDay, an annual commemoration of six Arab citizens of Israel killed during demonstrations against the confiscation of land in the north of country in 1976.

Large crowds of flag-waving protesters marched toward the border, some of them throwing stones and drawing Israeli fire that officials said killed at least five people. The Palestinian Health Ministry said at least 500 demonstrators were hurt by live fire, rubber-coated steel pellets or tear gas used by Israeli forces.

The protests had begun as mass sit-ins organized by #Gaza's Hamas rulers, but quickly spun out of control.
