Man, 18 yrs ago yesterday, I see @コモン’s #LWFC as some of the most fun I’ve had makin music. All the records from 98-2000 (the recording process) all yield different memories: #MamasGun I was sick as a dog & all of my drumming was done after 2am w the exception of #AD2000. #Voodoo was scary cause it was unchartered territory & there was fear in the air (not D) of the commercial viability. I mean y’all have the finished product but them ruff mixes sounded like NOTHING on radio and MTV so I was paranoid & we had something to prove w #ThingsFallApart (were we as good as they said we were? Could we deliver THAT ALBUM? Still salty the source didn’t give us the lead review)—-but man—-Like Water For Chocolate was like—-Miller Time. Like when you clock out work and just go have fun—-I mean I mighta had a chip on the shoulder for all the hip hop heads that wanted to know “where the beats at!!??” But man practically EVERY song I can recall a unique memory of fun Time Travelin was just Me/Dilla/James/D’Angelo havin fun jammin and Com was like “this HAS to open the album” it’s the only song the original #Soulquarians are all playing on together. The comedy of “you don’t know where the one is” antics of me and Com was “Heat”. Cold Blooded was me & D jammin on PFunk’s #FunkinForFun & Com was like “yup! Need this!”—-i wish I had the bare hand clap track on deck for y’all to hear our reaction to what Roy Hargrove did on horns (me/D/James/Com) we were jaw dropped and giving dap laughing and like “ish cot DAYUM!!!!” I buried that in the final mix but the party atmosphere of the clap track was genuine bonding. Of course I told the story of doubting Dilla could make anything dope from Rick James #GiveItToMe & in 3 mins he made Doin It—-that’s when I declared #DillaIsGod. I already foolishly revealed I hated “The Light” at first. My one regret was not being there to watch Bilal destroy “Funky For You” (out of town) when Mos was around it was jokes all day w his brothers The Questions. Femi Kuti’s arrival in the studio was straight outta Coming To America. Just fun man. Fun times
