It was filled to the brim with hundreds of photo albums of my life starting from when I was just a baby until my late teens. Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was go back in time and scan through the photos and examine how others saw me move through my life. This photo in particular holds significant meaning to me. Here you see me, my step dad, and my younger brother. Now although it looks as if we are a prime example of your all American family, it never actually felt that way. Photographs only made it seem like it. I’ve never really been close to my family ever since I was a kid and although the many stack of photos show one thing, the truth is the lack of intimacy I shared with them. Because of this, my family unknowingly drove me to be the extremely independent and driven person that I am today. I was forced to grow up fast because it was a lot easier than asking for my parents help. It’s hard to be transparent about the things we feel people may judge us for. But this is just a friendly reminder that photos (particularly on social media) only show one side of a story. We are all beautifully unique in our own way and are not defined by what one side of a photo tells you.
