I’m not much of a fuzz historian, though I do love them most of all, but I can tell you what I know about these, or at least info I have heard about them. These pedals are both Sovtek Big Muffs, made in Russia, (the green one rumored to be made out of tank parts). I believe Electro Harmonix partnered with Sovtek and allowed Sovtek to make them. The Green Big Muff on the left is my personal pedal that I purchased when it first came out in the 90’s. I think I was about 16, and I had saved up all of my money to buy it so I could sound like The Smashing Pumpkins. It wasn’t particularly cheap back then, but it completely changed my sound and began my love affair with fuzz. The sound moved me a little out of punk and into rock. I had nicknamed this one Mother Panic, which would later become the name of a DC Young Animal comic book character I co-created. I would say this one is a bit more rowdy than the one on the right. Still sounds great. I used this pedal a little bit on Hesitant Alien, as well as some of my favorite pedals in production by Watson Electronics. The grey and blue pedal on the right goes by the nickname of the “Civil War” Big Muff, I believe because it is blue and grey. This pedal is a little more compressed sounding in my opinion, a bit more controlled and clear, and we used one like it to get the distortion on S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W. These are both kind of fuzz grails in my opinion (maybe not Mega-Grails), with the Civil War being the rarer of the two.
