Wrote this post with my 7 years old son after reading together a lot about our new world...He still can’t fully realize what it means “they no longer exist” and most importantly why?

Planet Earth is on the verge of a mass extinction, with species dying at a pace unseen since the dinosaurs. The vertebrate population alone fell 52 percent between 1970 and 2010, which means the planet now has about half as many fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals as it did just 45 years ago.
Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhinoceros, died in Kenya Monday, leaving his species one step closer to complete extinction, even as a group of scientists undertake an unprecedented effort to try to keep this animal from vanishing entirely. Photographer @amivitale chronicled the final moments of his life and says there is still hope for the future of his kind. ????
