Ever looked closely at a flamingo’s beak? Kind of odd… It’s upside down! Unlike most birds the upper bill moves while the bottom bill is fixed. Think about a toucan, eagle or hawk. They have a large upper beak with a smaller lower beak. For flamingos it’s reversed! Flamingos feed with their heads upside down in the water stirring up sand and filtering in algae, shrimp, crustaceans and insects. This filter feeding is similar to whales and oysters.
