Did you know that some plants can essentially come back from the dead? They’re called resurrection plants, and they can lose 95% of their cellular water and survive in a dry, dead-like state for years. Only 135 flowering plant species have this ability, and it seems like magic. How do they do it? Molecular biologist Jill Farrant is figuring it out, and she hopes her research will help us grow food in our upcoming hotter, drier world. “What we're trying to do very rapidly is to repeat what nature did in the evolution of resurrection plants some 10 to 40 million years ago,” she says.
