Ching Shih was born in the Guangdong province in China, and at a young age, she started working as a prostitute on a floating brothel. There, she met a pirate—Zheng Yi—who asked her to marry him. According to legend, she refused, until he promised to let her have equal power in his organization. Together they ran the Red Flag Fleet which commanded over 1,500 ships and 80,000 pirates. After Yi’s death, Shih assumed full control of the fleet, and put a strict code of behavior into place that included specific rules for treating female captives. If a pirate raped a female captive, he would be put to death, and if a pirate took a captive for a wife, he was required to be faithful. After several years of success, Ching Shih apparently retired in 1810, when the Chinese government granted her amnesty.
In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
