“Recently I’ve been speaking a lot about gender equality. Not from a place of rectitude but rather from the understanding that I am a man who’s been conditioned by the same deleterious system as other men. That like many men I have said and done things which may have impacted women in a negative way. For a man to try and claim otherwise would be fraudulent. I don’t see this as a space to try and exonerate oneself, nor do I think it’s solely about the male, but rather I see that gender oppression, rape, misogyny and chauvinism are all male problems, and all interconnected to patriarchal power structures. Women need allies, they need men who can communicate to other men and so if that means reconfiguring the language to help include men who might otherwise conflate feminism with misandry, then so be it. We need to accept women have a legitimate reason to be angry, to stop denying them the autonomy which constitutes a basic human right. Men are nervous. The right-wing affront on women’s liberation has never been more fortified than what it is now. These are dangerous times and while the conversation is long and complex, we need to work together, with women leading the way to essentially smash down the patriarchy.“ ™@anthony_anaxagorou ▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️ All photographs by Jean Depara (known as Depara), an Angolan-born photographer who worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
