Keep reading for tips on shooting long exposures from @lostc0llective: “The Great Ocean Road is probably the most picturesque road I've driven on in Australia. There are no shortage of landmarks to shoot along the way. It's such a beautiful part of Australia. This photograph was taken just before sunset, using a 6-Stop ND filter to slow things right down. Having such a slow shutter speed helped to soften the ocean in the background, while keeping the shutter open long enough to allow a few cars to completely pass in both directions. This created the streaks of light winding over the road. I got quite lucky that there was almost no wind, so I didn't have to worry about camera shake, and all the surrounding vegetation was still for the duration of the exposure. I think shooting long exposures requires a lot of patience, but the results are rewarding when it works. It can be frustrating having to wait so long between shots to see if you've made any mistakes, as you don't have the luxury of instantaneous feedback. So it pays to be a little bit more attentive to avoid mistakes in the first place. Always remember to cover the viewfinder too – so that you don't get a light leak that ruins the exposure. The D810 has a built-in viewfinder cover that can be flicked down with ease – making things a lot easier when shooting long exposure.
