As a kid from The Bronx...we All remember this.. ??? • #Repost w/ @mahershalaali @imroxanneshante is a legend. A staple from my youth. Some of my first and favorite records at the time were #RUNDMC, #TheFatBoys, #Whodini, and #UTFO’s Roxanne Roxanne single. I can’t overstate how huge that record was. In the midst of the Roxanne Roxanne single spreading like wildfire, @imroxanneshante, a young battle rapper from #TheQueensBridgeProjects released a dis track in response to UTFO that changed the conversation and the direction of hip-hop forever. We all needed to see a woman/women going toe to toe lyrically with men. At that time and in that era, that was new information. @imroxanneshante paved the way for #LaurynHill, #MCLyte, @queenlatifah, #MonieLove, #Bahamadia, @ladybugmecca, @TheLadyofRage #foxybrown, #LilKim and so many more. She paved a way through our ignorance and biases, proving that women could stand on equal footing in rap. I was approached about this project two years ago... it’s the most difficult role I’ve ever committed to doing. I literally had nightmares the last week of filming. But it was necessary to go to those dark places for the culture that has given so much to my life, and people of color around the world.
