Each prayer begins the same way, with “Good and gracious God.” Sister Jean Dolores-Schmidt makes sure of that. But it’s in the words that follow that Sister Jean, the 98-year-old nun who serves as the team chaplain for @loyolachicago’s NCAA tournament-bound #basketball team, really finds her voice. She asks for God’s protection for the players. She asks for the referees to call fouls “justly.” She asks that the Ramblers execute the plays the way they were intended. “She lights up every room she goes into,” said the team’s coach, Porter Moser. Sister Jean typically makes her way around campus in this pair of custom maroon basketball sneakers. Before she fell and broke her left hip in November, Sister Jean had missed only 2 Loyola home games since 1994. When she was forced to miss 8 this season after surgery, she followed the play-by-play on her iPad. But with one more medical clearance, Sister Jean plans to head to Texas to cheer on her beloved Ramblers. “They’re very special, and they’re very good,” she said. “These kids play with their hearts and their heads because they love their school and because they love basketball.” Swipe left to see a portrait of Sister Jean by @alyssaschukar.
