The feature film premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and won the coveted FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. ⠀ ? #1: Raised in Ohio by a Jordanian mother and Palestinian father, Cherien drew from her personal experience when writing AMREEKA --a prescient look at the experiences of Arab-Americans, the racism they encounter, and the quotidian struggles they face. Cherien went on to make a second feature film, MAY IN THE SUMMER, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and to direct episodes of EMPIRE AND QUANTICO. In 2011, she joined us as a Creative Advisor at the Rawi Middle East Screenwriters Lab in Jordan and in 2014 she was a Panelist at the Shorts Lab in Philadelphia. Recently this year at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, she was selected as a Jury for the Short Film Program. ⠀ ? #2: MAY IN THE SUMMER: May seems to have it all until she travels to Jordan to plan her wedding. There, she runs into family chaos: Her mother threatens to boycott the wedding; her younger sisters treat her like a mother; and her estranged father suddenly returns. ⠀ Women at Sundance discovers, spotlights, and forges ways for independent women filmmakers to succeed as storytellers who shape our cultural landscape.
