As I fly across the country on International Women's Day, I can't help but think about the history of women in aviation. Did you know that women have been flying since the 1700s but really weren't professionally recognized until more recently? 1973 - at age 24, Bonnie Tiburzi becomes the first female pilot hired by a major U.S. airline. 1977 - former WASPs (Women's Airforce Service Pilots) finally receive WWII veterans' status. 1978 - Jill Brown-Hiltz is the first African American woman to fly for a U.S. commercial airline. 1984 - the first year women captain 747 cross-country and transatlantic flights. 1993 - Jeannie Flynn becomes the first fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Fast forward to now: We live in a time where female empowerment is often used as a marketing tool and as you look deeper, the companies doing this are rarely putting their flashy messaging into practice. And you know what? Women ARE powerful, but we don't need empty blanket statements from marketing campaigns to remind ourselves of that. What we need is space to do our work, just like the women listed above. That means people who are maintaining outdated/harmful environments need to move over and get out of the way. I hope today is a day that we all appreciate the women who came before us - the ones who made lasting impact, the ones who history will never name, the ones that pushed against the status quo, the ones who wove their anger into compassion and opportunity for others, the ones who have dared to be disliked and the ones who have opened up the sky for us to fly.
