Liz Claiborne has always been an inspiration to me. Not only did she revolutionize fashion by designing clothing for women entering the workplace in the 70s that didn’t look like menswear, Liz Claiborne Inc. was the first company founded by a woman to reach the Fortune 500 in 1988. She was also the first woman to become chair and CEO of a Fortune 500 company. She inspired and championed women within the industry to take on more advanced and higher level jobs and challenged sexist ideologies about what women wanted as well as the subtle oppressive policies that existed in the workplace. ⠀
From the New York Times ~ "Strong willed with an acute business sense, she defied the male-dominated ranks of the fashion industry by starting her own company in 1976 with Mr. Ortenberg, a textiles executive who had been her boss for two years, beginning in 1954. In a reversal of roles, she gave him the corporate title of secretary."⠀
