Also amazing news- we won the MIT Climate CoLab contest! Thank you guys for getting involved every week!!! “I work with a student activism group at MIT to campaign for climate change policy. Compared to their peers at other universities, most MIT students don’t pay as much attention to politics and current events because they are so focused on science and engineering. That’s not to say they don’t care: many of my classmates decided to become engineers and scientists because they believe wholeheartedly in the ability of science and technology to enact real change in the world. In particular, many MIT students want to solve climate change. Unfortunately, they fail to see the importance of public policy in addressing climate change and making the world a safer, more just place. They have bought into the dangerous myth that a silver technological bullet is all that we need to stop climate change—the same myth that many politicians lean on to justify inaction on climate issues. In truth, to solve climate change and a whole host of other issues facing society, we need to use both public policy and technology. We’ve been developing technologies to mitigate climate change for decades; it must be complemented with strong public policy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why I’m campaigning to #PutAPriceOnIt.”
