Rice is the staple of the Sri Lankan diet and has been a vital social and economic cog for centuries. The island may have begun cultivating rice as early as 800 B.C., but the exact beginning of the industry is unclear. Around 400 B.C., large scale irrigation systems were built to facilitate the mass production of the crop. As many as 2,000 varieties of rice may have come from Sri Lanka, once renowned as the Granary of the East.
