Had a very depressing President’s Day yesterday. Got really down about the state of the presidency, of debate, of truth… Then I heard Brandon Terry speak about the complexity of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s philosophies on activism, society, and solutions. “I have a dream” didn’t come out of a vacuum, and the fabric of thought in which that speech sat is complicated… but it gave me so much hope. A few takeaways: Thought and activism go hand-in-hand - your thoughts and words have to match your deeds. That doing the right thing is good for the person doing it. That any argument for evil will eventually falter because what props up those arguments runs counter to what we all deep down know to be true. And that King was respected among activists he disagreed with because he showed them the respect of truly trying to understand their argument. Borrowing from a genius as complicated as King is challenging - in a good way - but it restored a lot of optimism for me. I bought his book today - link in bio.
