There was a Presidential hippo? Calvin Coolidge was gifted a pygmy hippo from the owner of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and the President immediately donated it to the National Zoo. The hippo, named Billy, had 23 calves and is believed to be the direct ancestor of most pygmy hippos in US zoos today. This is not a photo of Billy, but it is one cute pygmy hippo! Presidents have had some wild pets throughout the years... Theodore Roosevelt for instance had a laughing hyena, gifted to him from the Emperor of Ethiopia. .
