The conversation around diversity in fashion tends to centre around models on the catwalk and their racial make-up
At @fashion_east I thought about the 2nd generation experience of @asaitakeaway (Vietnamese-Chinese) and also @supriya_lele (Indian) and that ‘son/daughter of an immigrant’ cultural conversation slowly entering fashion’s fray
Our focus tends to be on faces and their colour (black/brown/white) which can somehow feel reductionist
That multi-faceted experience of feeling ‘British’ but not, and that to-and-fro dialogue between your parents’ home country and your adopted home, is equally important and enriching to fashion
Especially in London where so many 2nd gen-ers exist
I was happy to write the press release of @asaitakeaway this season - “We’re all swimming upstream” was the closing line. Think about that.
