Even though the waves are small today, I am so jazzed to go surf with my daughters. Just reflecting on the fact that since I started surfing at 13yrs old I was paranoid and constantly worried about getting attacked by a white shark. I have a vivid recollection of the many surf sessions me and my buddy Jeff Schwein would go do between Santa Cruz and San Francisco at these isolated beaches that were so cold and water so dark. You either paddled out through your fear or you didn’t surf. That Fear stayed with me until 12 years ago when I decided to finally face the fear head on. Did it dissolve immediately? No not at all. It’s taken time and lots of work and it hasn’t gone away completely. There are still times today when I go out ON the water and the thought plays in my head. When your sitting on the surface and can’t “see” what’s happening beneath you is much different then when your under the water with a mask on. The difference today is When that thought does comes I have tools to deal with them. Most importantly are the facts, and the truth is I am more likely to win the super lotto not once but twice this month then get attacked by a Shark while surfing today. So when I have that freak out moment I immediately go to that statistic and the fear subsides. So if it works for me maybe it’ll work for you too. Hopefully your not scared of sharks and this post is mute but if you have a fear of the water and it’s kept you from enjoying our beautiful oceans, I really hope that tool I use can work for you too. Sharks aren’t something to worry about, focus more on riptides and currents and making sure you have eyes on you and avoid cramping. Those things are way more likely to cause issues then a shark.
