More often than not, musicians and their live performances are mere accessories in a fashion show - part of the set design to amplify the “cool” credentials. Last night at #NYFW , a concert of sorts happened and it was magical. @telfarglobal Telfar Clemens was reflecting on the fact it took the mainstream industry over a decade to notice him, culminating in his winning the @cfda Fashion Fund last year And so ensued a beautiful and heartfelt flow of gratitude from a cohort of artists led by @devhynes, singing an adapted hymn “Grateful” @ianisiah @kelelam @thisisstarchild @septumpapi @kelseylu69 @arsunx @altonmason @oyinda @070shake Interesting how gospel-esque vocals were able to articulate Telfar’s contribution to NY’s fashion leftfield-gone-right. And these artists moved, swayed, sang from their lungs in a wardrobe of “rock” staples - leather trews, movement-enabling knits and boy band satin shirts baring chest and heart. “Everybody make some noise right here,” they intoned. Telfar himself came on stage at the end to sing his own thanks to those that have supported him over the years. It’s never been about pleasing everyone and anyone, but the core that recognises and appreciates Telfar’s talent In amidst NYFW quandary came something lucid, true and quite lovely to watch In another unconventional turn, the collection will be open to view to the public at @century21stores from the 12th-14th Feb , giving over the role of “buyer” to the public. You can inform what goes into production, based on the premise that retailers base their buying decisions on commercial nous, and thus restrict how a designer’s collection is seen by customers Plenty of food for thought on the changing format of how collections are presented, sold and what the function of a fashion show is today. Grateful. Cheers, Telfar!
