I've been wanting to write about "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls" since it came out (it tells the story of 100 extraordinary women in history), but I didn't want to do a review based on my own opinion. I wanted to write about my entire experience reading it with Mazzy and Harlow. It took about a year, since we only read it when we have time and when they are interested. We read only a couple stories at once since each one breeds its own discussion— about women's rights, about arranged marriage, about racism, about religious differences, about war... the list goes on. Now that we've finished, it's amazing to look back at our book, filled with post-its on all the women who Mazzy chose to bookmark along the way— including Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, Michelle Obama, Helen Keller, Brenda Chapman (one of the first female animators at Disney and the first female director of a Pixar movie - Brave) and Ann Makosinski, who won 1st prize at the Google Science Fair at the age of 15. It also gave my girls comfort to know that even though Hillary Clinton didn't win the Presidency, she will still be an important part of our history. The time we took reading the book worked out perfectly, because just as we were finishing, Mazzy and Harlow started asking if there were more "rebel girls" out there and if perhaps they would be considered "rebel girls" one day. Then I got to surprise them with the newly released "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls Part 2." If you want to read more about our experience reading the @rebelgirlsbook, like how we discussed some of the big issues that came up, I wrote all about it on the blog today! #mommyshortsbookclub #rebelgirls #rebelgirlsbook #thefutureisfemale
