Every year, at least 2 million Americans are diagnosed with infections that don’t respond to antibiotics—and 23,000 people will die from them. Unfortunately, there isn’t much hope on the horizon when it comes to new drugs. The paucity of treatments is fueling interest in phage therapy, which uses tiny viruses called bacteriophages to destroy lethal strains of drug-resistant bacteria. Only a handful of people have received the therapy, because it isn’t yet approved by the FDA. Before phage can go mainstream, the science needs to catch up—which experts are hopeful will happen this year, when a number of trials will kick off in the U.S. These bacterial colonies were grown in petri dishes at the Kolter Lab at Harvard Medical School.
