Want to learn more about the work of Susan Te Kahurangi King? The prolific artist's earliest works date back to 1958 when she was just seven years old and offer reinterpretations of the popular cartoon characters she saw in the comic books her father gave her and a plush Donald Duck toy her mother made. King poured over comics as a child, and concepts within them like repetition, expression, and character development come across strongly in her work. Though she was not heavily influenced by television cartoons, King's drawings display a certain dynamism. To show movement and progression, the artist collapses time, often suspending multiple figures and events simultaneously in the same space.
