In 2012, @tallie_elisha was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia, and her fight against cancer began. At the time, the now-17-year-old looked to @taylorswift and her music for inspiration. “I would often listen to her music to get my mind off of the sickening chemotherapy,” Tallie tells Teen Vogue; the teen even got the chance to meet her during a taping of #GoodMorningAmerica. “She told me how meaningful and inspirational it was to visit and meet children battling cancer,” she remembers. Though Tallie asked Taylor to visit her at the hospital — a vow, she says Taylor promised to keep — she also admits that, at the time, she “figured [Taylor] would forget and continue on with her life. However, not too long after, she visited for a total of five hours. She played with all of the children and sang their favorite songs. She really gave hope to all of the children staying in the hospital.” Since then, Tallie’s paid the inspiration forward by starting @catwalk_4_cancer to help raise money for kids who are fighting various types of cancer. “Our inspiration comes from the hospitals we visit where children are fighting pediatric cancer,” Tallie explains, adding that the organization “created a fashion show in order to raise awareness” and help them fight back. The show, she says, helps “children to feel confident despite the side effects from chemotherapy that have impacted their physical appearances.” She also notes that the foundation has raised over $180,000 in a total of three fashion shows, with proceeds directly benefitting patients. Although cancer is a tough battle to fight, Tallie encourages people not to focus on the negatives. “When people think of children fighting cancer, they always think, ‘Oh wow. I pity that child,’” she says. “But people fail to recognize how these are just regular, normal children. I used to hate telling people I had once battled cancer because it always came with a look of pity. However, it is only something that has made me stronger and braver.” Her proudest accomplishment to date was starting Catwalk 4 Cancer, because, she says, “I want to live in a world where no child has to battle cancer.” #ShineTheory
