When astronauts return to Earth from deep space on our Orion spacecraft (@ExploreNASA), they will need to be picked up as quickly as possible. That’s where the #NASARecoveryTeam & the U.S. Navy (@USNavy) comes in.
After traveling through space at 25,000 miles per hour, our Orion spacecraft will slow to 300 mph after it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. Then down to 20 mph before it safely splashes down in the Pacific Ocean.
The recovery team will be in place at the capsule’s location to quickly and safely bring the capsule and astronauts aboard the U.S. Navy recovery ship.
Last week, an integrated NASA and U.S. Navy crew were aboard the U.S.S. Anchorage, testing out new ground support equipment and practicing their procedures.
