It’s not dinosaur, it’s a tiny Guam rail chick breaking his way out of that egg! Our newest Guam rail chick hatched Jan. 16 at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Chicks hatch about 20 days after their eggs are laid. Keepers are hand-raising this chick because he is going to serve as an ambassador bird for the Guam Department of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources. The five other chicks that SCBI has hatched since November will be released to the wild in Rota, which is free of invasive brown-tree snakes. Guam rail chicks are born with downy feathers and are capable of running and walking within 24 hours. #WeSaveSpecies #RealHatchimal
