So I’ve been working in this industry for 12 years now and until recently I didn’t know many other Latina artists. We would see each other in audition rooms or at red carpet events but never spoke to one another. Could be because we saw each other as competition or a threat, or there was a sense of dislike for no reason. This business is tough and you see the same faces in each audition, going out for the same role as you. Sometimes you see a new face, A younger face, A “fresh” face and you’re thinking “SHIT! Will I work again?” But there is a shift that happened recently where instead of ignoring one another, we are encouraging each other. I’m beyond grateful to @hereisgina and @americaferrera for gathering as many Latina artists as they can and putting us all in a room together so we can meet. It turns out, no one was threatened, no one was hatin. We all felt inspired by each other and hopeful as we watched each others career grow. We all cheer when someone books a job and say “YEEEES! Another one!” We all tweet and post about each other’s projects because we want it to succeed. We want to see more people like us on the screen. We were all just too scared to talk to one another because we had the same fear. Isn’t it funny how much you learn when you actually talk to someone instead of assuming who they are and what they think of you? I have friends now. I used to walk into events looking at other Latina artists wishing I could talk to them and tell them how much I admire them. Now they’re my friends. Now I feel more empowered and more encouraged than ever because they have my back and I sure as hell have theirs. We openly celebrate each other. #fiercelylatina #latinaswholunch
