Let’s celebrate Penguin Awareness Day with this portrait of two king penguins at the @IndianapolisZoo. These incredible flightless birds are the second largest penguin species, weighing in at 21 to 40 pounds (9.3-18 kg). These penguins do not make nests, but instead stand upright, put their single egg on top of their feet and nestle it under the loose skin on their abdomens to incubate it. Females and males are monogamous and take turns incubating their egg in 6-18 day shifts. When the chicks are born, they look so different from their parents that early explorers once described them as a completely different species. Though these birds do not fly, they are extremely adept swimmers, capable of diving more than 300 feet and swimming at speeds of 4-6 mph (6.5-10 kph). Overfishing is an issue that is threatening penguins all across the globe, particularly in the Southern Ocean region. Commercial fishing not only eliminates penguins’ food sources, but also causes many to die due to entanglement in fishing nets. Another threat to penguins, especially those living in Antarctica, is climate change. Many penguins depend on sea ice for breeding locations as well as access to food. The warmer our planet becomes, the less ice there is for penguins to live on. Let’s honor all penguins today by pledging to shop for fish less and locally (or give it up completely) and to reduce our carbon emissions. . #penguinawarenessday #penguins #conservation #natgeo #photoark #savetogether
