Here I am in my first movie role with the vivacious Elizabeth Taylor at Shepparton Studios. The movie is called “The Mirror Cracked. ” Elizabeth plays a Hollywood actress making her comeback (playing Mary Queen of Scots). I’m playing Jaime. All I have to do is show up. So...I’m waiting for my train at Raynes Park station reading my newspaper, it’s 7am, all is good with the world. I have my first movie role (no lines) with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak. The film is directed by Guy Hamilton (who directed “Goldfinger” ... how could I forget! ) Out of the corner of my eye I catch my (late) wife Cassie running down the platform, shouting, “you’re late, you’re late! The clocks have gone forward.” What? No! “Yes, it’s 8 o’clock ...” Oh shit! I’m done for. This is it...first movie role and I’m late. I hate being late. In a mad panic, to get to my destination I accidentally bump into a lady from the Salvation Army with her donation box, then run back to apologize while putting a few pounds in her donation box. When I finally get to the studio gasping for breath, they throw me into hair and make and take me to the sound stage. There waiting in this cavernous empty space is Guy Hamilton, Tony Curtis, Kim Novak and Angela Landsbury ... and now me, dry mouthed mumbling my apologies, dressed in silk britches with a mullet hair do. I was politely welcomed then I waited silently in the company of all for Liz to arrive. And she did, in black leather pants, black fur bomber jacket and black wrap around shades. We rehearsed. She said my name, “Jamie, oh Jamie”... and with a vacant look of adoration she clasped me to her warm bosom. That was the scene. Liz went in to hair and make up and we waited... and waited. She came out around three in the afternoon looking resplendent and every inch the movie star she was. We talked about the making of “Black Velvet” and riding horses, and the problems she had with her back from that time. She was glorious, funny and kind. Having given all my money to the Salvation Army, I had to take the bus home. The next week, I landed my second movie “The Long Friday” with Bob Hoskins. Still no lines.
