This is Mary Pickford and Frances Marion. I knew of Mary, but I’d never heard of Frances until I read @melaniebenjamin_author’s The Girls in the Picture. Not only were Mary and Frances best friends, they were also pioneers when Hollywood began, becoming the highest paid actress and screenwriter of their time. Mary was also a film producer as well, and one of the founding members of United Artists AND the Academy. Both women won Academy awards, but Frances was the first screenwriter (male or female) to win two! She was also a director, journalist and author. These women were iconic, and I am so grateful to Melanie for introducing me to their story of trials and triumph but, more importantly, friendship. In the light of everything that happened, last year especially, it is so important to remember that the very foundation of Hollywood were men and women working together, side by side, building an empire. And women helping women grow and succeed. So my #WCW is for Mary, Frances, and Melanie, all innovators with a grand story to tell. #TheGirlsInThePicture
