Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. day. There are so many remarkable quotes from Dr. King, but this one has always struck me, as
in many ways it goes to the root of so many persistent problems: "There is an almost universal quest for easy answers".
To state the obvious, we live in an unspeakably complicated world. But the easiest way for a politican or leader
to gain power is to tell people that the world isn't, in fact, complicated, and that the problems are simple, and
can be remedied by blaming the right group of people. Hitler blamed the Jews. Pol Pot blamed the intellectuals.
Ayatollah Khomeni blamed infidels. And Trump and Republicans and Right Wing politicians everywhere blame immigrants, non-whites, and the poor.
But time has taught us over and over again; the only people worthy of blame are the ones doing the blaming, and the
only ones worthy of being villified are the ones doing the villifying.
These dark days remind me of another Martin Luther King, Jr quote: "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous
than sincere ignorance". If we work hard, and especially if we resist in-fighting, we can drive the forces of ignorance, racism, xenophobia, and hate
back into the darkness from where they came.
"When you are right you cannot be too radical".
